Phanerozoic variation in dolomite abundance linked to oceanic anoxia

چکیده
Abstract The abundance of dolomitic strata in the geological record contrasts with general rarity locations where dolomite forms today, a discrepancy that has long posed problem for their interpretation. Recent culture experiments show can precipitate at room temperature, raising possibility many ancient dolomites may be syngenetic origin. We compiled large geodata set secular variations Phanerozoic, coupled compilations genus richness marine benthic invertebrates and sulfur-isotope carbonates. These data is negatively correlated to diversity, four peaks occurring during mass extinctions. Dolomite also correspond rapid increase composition (δ34S), an indicator enhanced sulfate reduction, anoxic oceans. results confirm Phanerozoic were closely linked changes both turn related oceanic redox conditions.

Diversity and abundance of Bolidophyceae (Heterokonta) in two oceanic regions.
The diversity and abundance of the Bolidophyceae (Heterokonta), a newly described picoplanktonic algal class which is a sister group to the diatoms, was assessed in the equatorial Pacific Ocean and in the Mediterranean Sea by culture isolation, molecular biology techniques, and pigment analyses. Eight strains of Bolidophyceae were isolated in culture from different mesotrophic and oligotrophic ...
متن کاملTowards an unbiased estimate of fluctuations in reef abundance and volume during the Phanerozoic
The globally preserved number and volume of ancient biogenic reefs is strongly biased by two factors: geological history and research intensity. These biases are sufficiently strong to cast doubts on the biological meaning of the recorded raw pattern. Without adjustment, it is hard to reliably identify factors potentially controlling the waxing and waning of this important ecosystem through tim...
متن کاملOrbital control on the timing of oceanic anoxia in the Late Cretaceous
The oceans at the time of the Cenomanian– Turonian transition were abruptly perturbed by a period of bottom-water anoxia. This led to the brief but widespread deposition of black organic-rich shales, such as the Livello Bonarelli in the Umbria–Marche Basin (Italy). Despite intensive studies, the origin and exact timing of this event are still debated. In this study, we assess leading hypotheses...
متن کاملA linked land-sea modeling framework to inform ridge-to-reef management in high oceanic islands
Declining natural resources have led to a cultural renaissance across the Pacific that seeks to revive customary ridge-to-reef management approaches to protect freshwater and restore abundant coral reef fisheries. Effective ridge-to-reef management requires improved understanding of land-sea linkages and decision-support tools to simultaneously evaluate the effects of terrestrial and marine dri...
متن کاملNatural variation in arabidopsis stomatal abundance
Our understanding of stomatal development in Arabidopsis thaliana is based on mutants with aberrant, often lethal phenotypes. Through a comprehensive analysis of stomatal abundance in wild A. thaliana accessions, Delgado et al. (pp. 1247–1258) determine relationships amongst stomata-related traits and uncover hidden genetic variation in stomata developmental pathways. The study identifies natur...
